What is a Managing Director?

Measuring the success of an agency, its clients, and providing guidance to achieve everyone’s mission and objectives is the part of the story that makes it to the job description. A managing director’s true role is to set a vision and create opportunities for the entire agency to achieve its goals. And, the managing director serves as the face of the agency. The company brand and personal brand are intrinsically linked. Leaders recognize this and find ways to leverage both for the benefit of the team and clients that choose to partner with them. Clients look to trust the agency, and the leadership within, to have their back and help them reach their own goals. That part sounds a little more exciting, right?

Managing directors strike a balance between leader and executor. When partnering together, both an agency and its clients look to achieve specific outcomes. They both desire goals that are bold and inspirational, goals that align with the values that the agency and its team members share. The managing director rallies everyone around these goals to help guide both parties towards a unified vision of how the marketing can impact that client and create results.

On the other hand, a managing director is often responsible for outlining a plan, the processes, and the culture on how to execute the work to achieve the goals. They are facilitators. Effective managing directors create possibilities for each team role to shine. They help build a sense of ownership so that each team member can bring their best selves to their work and create the best outcomes. At the same time, they’re always available to provide guidance or ready to roll up their sleeves and ask, “How can I help?”
